The following table outlines some of the Transmission-Based Precautions (TBPs) required for a number of infectious agents/diseases when delivering patient care, primarily:

• patient placement considerations whilst the patient is considered infectious
  • isolation facilities should be prioritised depending on the known/suspected infectious agent. When specialised ventilated isolation facilities are indicated but unavailable, the next best option should be considered with an appropriate risk assessment.
• the recommended mask (Fluid resistant surgical mask (FRSM)/Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)) required to minimise the risk of transmission. The use, or non-use, of masks should be based on a clinical risk assessment. This assessment should include consideration of respiratory (R1, R2 and R3) infectious agents, as well as the risk of splashing or spraying of infectious body fluid particles onto the mucosa.

The Hierarchy of Controls should also be used within health and care settings to prevent the transmission of infection – please see Appendix 16 for further details.
